Denver Post available on the Kindle

May 3, 2008

Denver Post Kindle EditionAmazon’s expanding the number of newspapers, magazines, and books available for the Kindle. Today I found out the Denver Post is available on the Kindle. Finally, a local newspaper (I love the WSJ but also like to keep up on the local news too). I’m excited to see how the Kindle format works out– I’ll update this post after I have a chance to try it out! Still on the wish list: Denver Business Journal & Boulder Daily Camera.

In other Amazon news, their homepage has a front & center link to their 2007 letter to shareholders. Interestingly, Jeff includes a copy of the 1997 letter to shareholders every year. Both letters are worth a read, as Amazon is on a roll and will only grow stronger in the coming years. I’m buying some Amazon stock for my Roth IRA this year, I love what they’re doing with Amazon Web Services among other things.

20 Mbps Fiber Internet

February 15, 2008

Today our IT department turned up a new 20 Mbps fiber line at our office :)

Sitting at my desk I clocked over 2MB/sec from Microsoft’s download servers:
Over 2 MB/sec from my desk!

What’s even cooler is the fact Qwest really installed a 1 Gbps line and choked it down to 20 Mbps in the Cisco box. 1 Gbps Internet is just a phone call (and a fat MRC) away.

I know what our employees will be doing on Monday morning– can anyone say BitTorrent? Content filtering, here we come!

Start-Up Junkies, a Really Cool Reality TV Show!

January 27, 2008

A new reality TV show premiered last week on MOJO HD called Start-Up Junkies. I’m not very big into reality TV, but this show is great. The first season gives you an inside look at Earth Class Mail, a start-up I blogged about last week. The first episode follows around the CEO as he tries to raise his first round of venture capital. The entire season is viewable on-line, so even if you don’t get MOJO HD you can watch it on your computer free of charge… check out episode 1 now!

Simplifying Life with SimulScribe and Earth Class Mail

January 22, 2008

Since the start of 2008 I’ve been trying to simplify my life. Naturally, I turned to technology-based solutions to help me accomplish my new year’s resolution.

The first thing I did on January 1, 2008 was sign up for SimulScribe. This was a good decision - I’ll never have to listen to another voice mail… ever! More about this wonderful service in a future blog post.

My latest endeavor is with a service called Earth Class Mail. ECM’s tag line is “your postal mail online”. When I signed up for the service I was able to choose a mailing address in one of 20 cities. They don’t have an address in Denver (yet) but I was assured they were adding more addresses soon. Now I can view scanned images of my sealed envelopes online as soon as the mail is received at the ECM processing facility. I can then choose to have my mail securely scanned to PDF, recycled, shredded or forwarded to myself or someone else. I’m really excited about this service. I think businesses have the most to gain from a service like ECM. Most consumers won’t pay $10/month for this and have major privacy concerns. When I told my girlfriend about ECM the conversation went something like this… “what, you are going to pay some stranger to open your mail? Are you crazy?!?” It will be interesting to see how ECM communicates their value proposition to consumers & reassures them of their privacy.

My first few pieces of mail arrived at the ECM facility this week. After an e-mail alerting me of new mail in my ECM inbox, I logged in and found a scan of the front & back of the envelope. I selected the mail piece and clicked on “scan”. Less than 24 hours later I got another e-mail alerting me the mail piece had been opened and scanned to a PDF. I downloaded the PDF to my computer and archived the original mail piece at ECM’s facility in Oregon. I can retrieve the archived letter whenever and have it shredded, recycled, or shipped to me anywhere in the world - via my web browser!

We’re also piloting ECM for Printfection. Even though we’re a small company we get tons of postal mail. We already scan our transactional mail (invoices, important confirmation lettters, etc.) and save them as PDFs. ECM seems like the next logical step to a completely paper-free, streamlined office.

I think services like Earth Class Mail are going to revolutionize how people consume basic services like postal mail. USPS address forwarding is terrible. I’ve moved about 5 times in the last 6 years and wish I had Earth Class Mail years ago!

Hello world!

March 15, 2007

After learning what a blog was in 2004 and finally understanding RSS in 2005, I’ve started my own blog (2007). We’ll see how this goes.. I’m a busy guy focusing all my energy on Printfection. Hopefully I’ll find time for a blog post now and then!
